Acid Rain

Normal precipitation is acidic, having a pH of about 5.6 (a pH of 7 is neutral). The term acid rain is used to describe precipitation that has a pH of less than 5.6. Much of the United States experiences acid rain, but the problem is most severe in the industrialized Northeast. The two gases that produce acid rain are sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides; both are products of the combustion of fossil fuels.
