Elected officials may be unlikely to pass legislation to prevent or fix environmental problems without strong public support. To generate such support, the public must be informed about environmental issues and express its desire for solutions. In 1990, Congress passed the National Environmental Education Act to provide educational opportunities for the public and to encourage the pursuit of careers related to the environment.
