Introduction

A community is a group of species living in the same environment. A desert environment and a mountain meadow environment are shown in the photos. Within each environment are interacting populations of many species of organisms. In community ecology, the focus is on a set of such species and the interactions among them. For example, we might wish to study the competitive interactions among tree species, or the interactions among bird species and the insect species they eat.
