Hormones and Pregnancy

If an ovum is fertilized, the corpus luteum does not degenerate as it does during a menstrual cycle that does not result in pregnancy. This is because the embryonic chorion (the fetal portion of the placenta) secretes chorionic gonadotropin, a hormone that acts like LH to sustain the corpus luteum.
