Twelve pairs of cranial and thirty-one pairs of spinal nerves carry sensory and motor signals to and from the central nervous system. Motor neurons of the somatic system go to skeletal (striated) muscle, while those of the autonomic system go to cardiac and smooth muscle and glands.
