Many organisms respond to chemicals in their environments. Animals have specialized receptors that respond to particular types of molecules. The human tongue, for example, has receptors for chemicals we perceive as sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. Chemoreceptors may be found all over the body surface, on the feet, or on the antennae depending on the type of animal.
