Visual pigments in the rods and cones change shape when they absorb light. Rods contain the pigment rhodopsin. When it changes shape in the presence of light, membrane permeability changes, resulting in a change in the frequency of action potentials. Cone cells contain other pigment molecules that are structurally similar to rhodopsin.
