Proteins

Amino acids are the monomers that bond together to form proteins. Proteins are used for structures, such as hair, and as enzymes, which assist in metabolic reactions. There are 20 different amino acids. One of the things they have in common is the presence of a nitrogen-based amino group. Adjacent amino acids in a protein molecule are joined by peptide bonds which form by condensation (dehydration) reactions.
