Fermentation

Under anaerobic conditions the final electron acceptor of the electron transport system (oxygen) is absent. Fermentation provides alternate pathways by which NAD+ can be regenerated. In this way glycolysis can continue to supply 2 ATP per glucose molecule although the Krebs cycle and electron transport system do not function. Lactic acid fermentation and alcoholic fermentation are shown here.
