Reptiles (Class Reptilia) are believed to have evolved from amphibians over 300 million years ago. Reptiles were the dominant terrestrial vertebrate for about 170 million years during the Mesozoic era. Most died out 65 million years ago. Those remaining today are primarily snakes and lizards.
