Introduction

Communities can differ in the number of species they contain, referred to as species richness or species diversity. For example, a coniferous forest ant community may have 3-4 species whereas a tropical forest ant community may have over 40 species. In general, as one moves from temperate latitudes to tropical latitudes the number of species in a given type of community increases.
