Organization

Predation can also influence community organization. In some communities there is a keystone predator. The removal of such a species from a community can reduce the number of other species. For example, sea stars feed on mussels. This controls mussel populations. When the sea star is removed from experimental areas the mussel population increases and crowds out other species, which reduces species diversity.
