Energy Flow

Because of the 10% rule of energy transfer, the amount of biomass and number of individuals that can be supported decreases as one moves up to higher trophic levels. Thus, there is typically a greater biomass and number of herbivores than carnivores. When we consider feeding the human population, this means that 10 times more people can be supported on a given amount of grain if the grain is eaten directly than if it is fed to cows which are then eaten by humans.
