The major types of terrestrial vegetation are called biomes. Although biomes are defined by the characteristics of the vegetation, biomes have characteristic animals as well. Biomes are determined by climate. Climate is determined by latitudinal patterns of rainfall and temperature, so we find similar biomes at similar latitudes. Note, for example, that most deserts are at 30 degrees north and south latitude.
