Darwin mulled over his ideas for 20 years after he returned to England. During that time he developed the concept of natural selection, a mechanism that could explain how descent with modification could occur. Darwin did not publish his ideas until he was spurred by a letter from Alfred Russel Wallace who proposed an identical mechanism.
