This illustration just shows members of these 2 families alive today, but many lineages within each family have died out. The process of adaptation and changes in populations due to things like genetic drift are referred to as microevolution because they tend to take place over short time periods (hundreds or thousands of years). Speciation and extinction are referred to as macroevolution because they usually take place over longer time periods.
