Constructing Phylogenies

Linnaeus, the first taxonomist, classified organisms according to genus and species and higher groups. This was before Darwin was even born. Linnaeus placed species in the same genus and higher groups based on similarity in morphology. After the idea of evolution was put forth, biologists called systematists attempted to develop a classification system that reflected evolutionary history. They wanted to construct phylogenetic trees, which are diagrams that group species based on sharing a common ancestor.
