Fossils

Fossils are the primary way of determining the history of life on earth. Geologists have long recognized that rock formations are composed of layers, called strata. Based on patterns of sedimentation, it is clear that these strata were built up over time, with the older strata occupying lower positions. Fossils present in these strata thus show the sequence of life forms that existed on the earth.
