Continental Drift

The history of life on earth is far from a linear increase of complexity and diversity. There have been mass extinctions as well as bursts of speciation. Continental drift is responsible for many of the geographic patterns of biodiversity, such as the presence of marsupial mammals in Australia. The continental masses, which are large plates that float on the fluid mantle layer, have been connected and become disconnected over millions of years.
