Gene Activity

The amino acid sequence of a protein is the message coded by DNA. Even if that message is faulty, it can still be transcribed and translated. In the case of sickle cell anemia, one nucleotide is different from that in the normal gene. This causes a change of one amino acid (see #6 in the illustration) and results in alteration of protein (hemoglobin) function.
