When plasmids containing a foreign gene are introduced into a bacterial culture, not all the bacterial cells will pick up the plasmids. To find the cells that have the foreign gene, a probe can be used. A probe is a single-stranded nucleotide sequence that will hybridize (pair) with the introduced gene. The probe is radioactive or fluorescent so that cells with the probe, and thus the gene of interest, can be recognized.
