Cutting DNA with restriction enzymes produces DNA fragments of varying length. These can be sorted using gel electrophoresis. Every individual will have a unique assortment of fragment sizes (RFLPs - restriction fragment length polymorphisms). In the figure you can see that sample I, which came from the crime scene, and sample II, which came from the suspect, are the same, whereas sample III, which came from the victim, is different.
