The human genome has about 100,000 genes and 3 billion nucleotide pairs. The Human Genome Project has been initiated to identify and locate all the human genes on the 23 pairs of chromosomes and to determine the base sequence for all 3 billion nucleotide pairs. The project will take a number of years. The information that can be gained from this enterprise should be of tremendous value for treating genetic diseases and understanding genetic and evolutionary phenomena.
