Glucose Catabolism
There are three major pathways of glucose metabolism: glycolysis, which splits a glucose molecule into two molecules of pyruvic acid; anaerobic fermentation, which occurs in the absence of oxygen and reduces pyruvic acid to lactic acid, and aerobic respiration, which occurs in the presence of oxygen and oxidizes pyruvic acid to carbon dioxide and water.
