Summation

Neurons frequently receive input from many different presynaptic cells simultaneously. Some of the incoming nerve fibers may produce EPSPs while others produce IPSPs. Whether or not the neuron fires depends upon whether the net input is excitatory or inhibitory. This is a process called summation. If summation results in a local potential that exceeds threshold at the axon hillock, an action potential is produced.
