Taste The sensory structures that detect gustatory, or taste, stimuli are the taste buds. Most taste buds are associated with specialized portions of the tongue called papillae. Taste buds, however, are also located on other areas of the tongue, the palate, and even the lips and throat, especially in children. There are four major types of papillae, named according to their shape: circumvallate, fungiform, foliate, and filiform. Taste buds are associated with circumvallate, fungiform, and foliate papillae. Filiform papillae are the most numerous papillae on the surface of the tongue but have no taste buds. |
