Hormone Action

General Characteristics of the Endocrine System

Endocrine glands and their hormones help regulate metabolic processes. They control the rates of certain chemical reactions, aid in transport of substances across membranes, and help regulate water and electrolyte balance. They also play vital roles in reproduction, development, and growth.
Endocrine glands secrete the hormones. These glands include the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, adrenal glands, and pancreas.
