Accessory Organs of the Skin

Hair is a slender filament of mostly dead keratinized epithelial cells that grow from a follicle, an oblique tube in the skin. The hair consists of the medulla, a core of loose cells and air spaces, surrounded by a cortex, which is densely packed keratinized cells. The cortex is covered by the cuticle.
