Construct a plasma membrane using styrofoam balls (polar heads), yarn (saturated fats) and pipe cleaners (unsaturated fats). Plastic netting can be used to hold the parts together. Various surface receptors and markers can be added as creativity and artistic ability allow.

Gortex® is a material that is unidirectionally permeable to water. It allows moisture to pass from the inside (of a jacket or tent) outward, but does not allow rain to penetrate inward.

Diffusion can be demonstrated by placing mothballs or perfume in one corner of the lecture hall before lecture begins. As time progresses, have students raise their hands (or, less obtrusive, colored flags) when they smell the odor.
