Chapter 31: Protists |
Brusca, R. and G. Brusca: Invertebrates, Sinauer Press, Sunderland, MA, 1990. A very thoughtful book on animal diversity with an excellent chapter on heterotrophic protists.
Corliss, J.: "An Interim Utilitarian ("user friendly") Hierarchical Classification and Characterization of the Protists," Acta Protozoologica, vol. 33, 1994, pages 1-51. The title says it all: a comprehensible treatment of an often confusing group of organisms.
Goodman, W.: "Cilioprotists: A Diverse Bunch," BioScience, vol. 43, May 1993, page 285. An interesting look at the extraordinarily wide range of nutritional modes encountered in ciliate protists.
Lambrecht, F.: "Trypanosomes and Hominid Evolution," BioScience, vol. 35, 1985, pages 640–46. A fascinating article that charts the probable effects of sleeping sickness on the course of human history.
Saffo, M.B.: "New Light on Seaweeds," BioScience, vol. 37, 1987, pages 654–64. Discusses recent studies of the role of light-harvesting pigments in depth zonation of seaweeds.
Waters, A., and others: "Plasmodium falciparum Appears to Have Arisen as a Result of Lateral Transfer Between Avian and Human Hosts," Proceedings of the National Academy of Science USA, vol. 88, April 1991, pages 3140–44. Humans may have caught malaria from chickens.
