Chapter 32: Protists |
Mitosis: Mitosis is an orderly process by which eukaryotic cells are duplicated. The five phases, Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase and Telophase, result in cells genetically like the parent cell.
Mutualism: An obligate symbiotic relationship between two organisms wherein each member of the relationship benefits from that relationship.
Relationships among the eukaryotes: Although all eukaryotes arose from protists, they did not all arise from the same protists. Multicellular green algae are considered to be the ancestors of the plants. Animals and fungi arose from different unicellular ancestors, not including fungus like protists.
Cyanobacteria: The cyanobacteria represent the most primitive autotrophic organisms. The photosynthetic forms are believed to have been the source of chloroplasts for eukaryotes through symbiosis. The aerobic members are believed to have been the source of mitochondria by symbiosis.
Diversity of protists: The kingdom, Protista, is the most diverse of all. It consists of many phyla, mostly unicellular, with little relationship between them, and no clear ancestry.
