Additional Readings

Chapter 35: Transport in Plants

Borghetti, M., and others (editors): Analysis of Water Transport in Plants, Cambridge University Press, New York, 1993. An up-to-date survey of current research in water transport.

Canny, M. J.: "Transporting Water in Plants," American Scientist, vol. 86, pages 152–159, March-April 1998. An up-to-date review of what is known about how evaporation from leaves pulls water to the tops of trees, aided by living cells that protect the stretched water.

Chapin, F.S., III: "Integrated Responses of Plants to Stress," BioScience, vol. 41, pages 29–36, 1991. Describes the centralized system of physiological responses in plants.

Galston, A.W.: Life Processes of Plants: Mechanisms for Survival, W.H. Freeman, New York, 1993. A good overview of transpiration and translocation in plants.

Loughman, B.C., et. al.: Structural and Functional Aspects of Transport in Roots, Kluwer Academic Publications, Norwell, MA, 1990. A detailed look at the movement of water and solutes through roots.

Marschner, H.: Mineral Nutrition of Higher Plants, Academic Press, New York, 1986. A comprehensive account of the subject.

Mooney, H.A., and others: "Plant Physiological Ecology Today," BioScience, vol. 37, pages 18–67, 1988. Nearly an entire issue of BioScience devoted to the ways in which plants adapt to their environments and how scientists study them. Highly recommended.

Salisbury, F.B. and C.W. Ross: Plant Physiology, 4th ed., Wadsworth, Belmont, CA, 1992. An outstanding textbook of plant physiology.

Zimmermann, M.H.: Xylem Structure and the Ascent of Sap, Springer-Verlag, New York, 1983. A delightfully written "idea" book on xylem structure and function by one who has contributed a great deal to our understanding of functional xylem anatomy and sap movement in plants.
