We have learned to expect much from science. It takes a lot to "boggle the mind" today. But, even the most jaded of us must be impressed by the technology described in this chapter. The challenges are considerable. The solutions are ingenious. A survey of both are contained in this chapter. We depend upon plants for much more than food and shelter. Indeed, the molecular biology of plants may well hold the best hope for mankind.
