Chapter 47: Locomotion

Carafoli, E. and J. Penniston: "The Calcium Signal," Scientific American, November 1985, pages 70–80. The release of calcium ion is the only known way in which the electricity of the nervous system is able to produce changes in the body. Nerves regulate all muscle contractions and hormone secretions by controlling the level of Ca++.

Cohen, C.: "The Protein Switch of Muscle Contraction," Scientific American, November 1975, pages 36–45. How proteins associated with myofilaments interact with Ca++ to trigger contraction.

Gordon, K.: "Adaptive Nature of Skeleton Design," BioScience, December 1989, pages 784–90. Plasticity allows changes in strength and locomotion.

Holloszy, O. J. and W. M. Hohrt: "Regulation of Carbohydrate and Fat Metabolism During and After Exercise," Annual Review of Nutrition 16, 1996, pages 121-38. A thorough account of how the metabolism of muscles changes with exercise. If you are interested in exercise and nutrition, this would be a good article to read.

Rogers, M.: "The Nature Of Muscles," National Wildlife, October/November 1990, pages 34–41. How efficient are the muscles of larger animals (including humans) compared to smaller ones? You may be surprised!
