Laboratory Prize

To promote excellence in undergraduate investigative biology laboratory courses, McGraw-Hill announces the establishment of a $500 award for a student enrolled in a course using Biological Investigations, Fifth Edition, by Warren D. Dolphin. The award will be based on the quality of a lab report describing the student’s laboratory work about one topic from Biological Investigations, Fifth Edition, Lab Topics 5-32. To be eligible, students must be nominated by their instructor and follow the procedures outlined below.

Rules

Failure to follow these rules will disqualify submissions from consideration

  1. Professors in charge of biology lab courses at colleges or universities using the lab manual, Biological Investigations 5E, by W. D. Dolphin are eligible to nominate students for this prize. The number of nominations is dependent on the number of lab manuals used, one nomination for the first 100 lab manuals and an additional nomination each time a multiple of 100 is exceeded.
  2. The lab report is to have been submitted originally as part of normal lab work, but the submitted copy may incorporate comments from others. Lab instructors are urged to accumulate outstanding lab reports during the semester and to base nominations on the best report from a semester.
  3. Submit each lab report in word processed form with charts and graphs prepared with a computer program. The style must conform to the format outlined in Appendix D of Biological Investigations 5E. Include a cover sheet with

  3. The nomination packet for each lab report should include
  1. A screening committee, selected by McGraw-Hill, will read the nominations. This committee will establish a short list of outstanding reports. Warren dolphin will then select the winning report and will rank the finalists. The winning author/s will receive a $500 prize, paid May of 2000. Author/s of the first and second place lab reports will also receive prizes, to be determined. Prizes will be awarded to an individual lab report author, or split between multiple authors for one lab report. All nominees will receive a certificate of accomplishment, indicating that they were nominated by their school for recognition in this national competition.
  2. The winning lab report and finalist lab reports will be published on the McGraw-Hill/Dolphin web site. Other lab reports may also be published on this web site.
  3. Submitted reports will not be returned to the authors or nominators. Receipt of nominations will be acknowledged by E-mail when addresses are included. If no E-mail address is available, receipt will be acknowledged by post.
