About the Author

Dr. Warren D. Dolphin is Professor of Zoology and Genetics and coordinator of the undergraduate programs in Biology and in Biological Illustration at Iowa State University (ISU). Born in Philadelphia, PA, he received his B.S. degree from West Chester State University in 1962 and his Ph.D. in Zoology (Cell Biology) from the Ohio State University in 1968. He was a National Institutes of Health research fellow and assistant professor at the University of Maine, where he did research on protozoan metabolism, before moving to ISU in 1970.

At Iowa State, Dr. Dolphin lectures in the first year biology courses, coordinates labs, and supervises the tenth largest undergraduate major in the university. His extensive experience with students who study the biological sciences for myriad reasons and his interactions with nearly 200 researchers in his discipline on campus have given him broad perspectives, which are reflected in his lab manual, now in its sixth edition. He views the biological sciences as "queen of the sciences," allowing motivated students to apply chemistry, physics, mathematics, and communication skills to the study of life.

Dr. Dolphin has always been interested in creating opportunities for students to learn. Recently he spearheaded efforts to develop an international field trip course that has sent students with ISU faculty members to locations of interest to biologists throughout the world, including such places as Antarctica, Kenya, and the Galápagos Islands, and he has personally led several trips to Australia, Costa Rica and Central Europe. He has also been an organizing force behind a new major at his university, Biological Illustration, which allows students to combine studies in art and science, and has seen this program quadruple in size under his leadership. Dr. Dolphin, with others, was responsible for the integration of computer technology into the teaching of biology on the campus. In addition, he has been active in promoting learning communities for incoming students, and was a pioneer in the use of video and self-paced testing technologies. In 1994, for his contributions in teaching, service and research, the University awarded him the honorary title University Professor.

In his leisure time, Dr. Dolphin builds furniture out of native Iowa walnut and likes to fish for salmon and lake trout in Lake Superior or in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northern Minnesota.
