The Darwin-Wallace 1858 Evolution Paper
This excellent site is an introduction to the lives of and interactions between the two men whose names are associated with our contemporary understanding of the evolutionary process, Charles Darwin and Alfred R. Wallace. The site provides a good introduction to the history of the work of these two scientists as well as discussing the involvement of other major players (i.e., Sir William Jackson Hooker, Charles Lyell). Included here are the 1858 paper coauthored by Darwin and Wallace, remarks by Lyell and Hooker, an extract from Darwin's 1844 "Essay", letters to Asa Gray, Wallace's 1858 letter to Darwin and Wallace's 1855 paper. These pages were prepared by James L. Reveal, F.L.S., Paul J. Bottino and Charles F. Delwiche of the Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics at the University of Maryland.
