Chapter 7: Energy And Metabolism

When considering the energy requirements of organisms, their ecological foundations become most obvious. All organisms need energy, and the source of that energy must be their surroundings. For some, the source is light, for others it is other organisms. Every species has evolved into some particular place in the energy web of its ecosystem. We function as we do because we inherited the genetic and chemical capability to make proteins that can oxidize reduced compounds from our environment and tap their energy.
