Chapter 19: Human Genetics

1. Relevance of Topic

This chapter lends itself easily to discussions that are relevant to most persons. A variety of diseases and syndromes can be used to introduce the chapter material and signify the importance of studies in this area.

2. Continuity

The previous chapter on genetic engineering is critical in discussions of treating human genetic disease, as well as in discussions involving the moral issues surrounding human genetic engineering experiments.

3. Demonstration Activities

1. Figure 19.1 shows three typical pedigrees.

1. Show a picture illustrating a normal distribution of human heights, a classic example of polygeny.

2. Show Figure 19.3, which quantitatively examines the height example.

1. Figure 19.4 illustrates the ABO blood type system.

2. Figure 19.5 shows the ABO compatibility chart for transfusion.
