Chapter Overview |
Chapter 21: Developmental Biology II: Differentiation |
The genetic nature of organisms is again illustrated by development. The genetic program, and how it is used variously over time and in different locations in a developing embryo, is shown to be the driving force of development. The molecular details of development in a few organisms, including Drosophila melanogaster, are presented. The evolution of animal body plans has been enlightened by the discovery of sets of genes that control development and that have been found to be very similar in various groups of animals. The evolution of plant anatomy has also apparently been influenced by sets of genes that control development.
