Chapter Overview

Chapter 23: Population Genetics

This chapter covers evolutionary changes that occur within a species, or microevolution. The Hardy-Weinberg principles for genetic equilibrium are explained and illustrated, along with a discussion of factors that affect allele frequencies in populations. Other factors contributing to evolution, such as mutation and selection, are covered. Variation in natural populations and the implications for humans are the final topics of discussion. Throughout, the emphasis on organisms as genetic complexes is continued.
