Evelyn Hutchinson's metaphor, that the evolutionary play takes place in the ecological theatre, is expanded upon in this chapter, as communities and the environment are integrated into theories regarding evolution. The mechanisms for evolutionary change are discussed in detail, including isolating mechanisms and types of speciation. The genetic basis for change is again emphasized, as a continuing theme in the text.
