Chapter 35: Animals II: The Coelomates

This chapter surveys the dominant animals on earth, the coelomates, which comprise two large clades, the protostomes and the deuterostomes. A traditional view of animal phylogeny is presented, with reference to more modern considerations in the Additional Reading section. The protostome phyla of annelids, arthropods, and molluscs are examined in detail. The deuterostome chordates are also described, with special emphasis on the vertebrates, including their probable evolutionary history.
