This chapter outlines the functions of a circulatory system and surveys various types of systems that exist in different animals. The mammalian circulatory system is the model for much of the information relating to gas exchange. The adaptive significance of many features of these systems are analyzed, along with the likely evolutionary path that has so far been laid in the development of circulatory systems.
