Anatomy

Three dimensional medical reconstructions
This site contains several nifty MPEG movies of various aspects of human physiology (e.g, colon fly-through (599 KB): better put your boots and hat on for this one!)
Images from the Visible Human Project
The National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health has provided a number of color photographs of frozen tissues and images from CAT and MRI scans of cadavers.
MRI Image Map
This collection of MRI images from the College of Medicine at the University of Kentucky allows you to use a clickable drawing of a human to select an MRI image for that approximate body region.
The W hole Frog Project
This impressive site has a great deal of information relating to frog anatomy and the use of frogs in educational settings. Particularly interesting is the Virtual Frog Dissection Kit which allows the user to selectively view body parts and organs of a virtual frog. There are also a number of three-dimensional images of frog anatomy, including rotating movies of the internal anatomy of a cyberfrog.
Interactiv e frog dissection
The purpose of this tutorial is to help one learn the anatomy of a frog and provide a better understanding of the anatomy of vertebrate animals in general, including humans. (From the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia.)
The Internet Pathology Laboratory for Medical Education
This resource based at the Health Sciences Center of the University of Utah includes hundreds of images of human gross anatomy (e.g., normal liver) and medical conditions (e.g., cirrhosis o f the liver). Most images have associated descriptions and this site also provides tutorials, laboratory exercises and self-testing mat erials on aspects of gross and microscopic pathology.
Path Web
This site is based at the University of Connecticut Health Center and provides searchable databases containing images of human organs (e.g, "Browse Organs") and the gross and microscopic effects of a wide range of diseases (e.g., "Browse General Disease Processes").
Vesalius
This site is billed as "an online graphical resource for the medical and surgical communities." The content here consists of an Image Archive and Clinical Folios of human anatomy. The Folios are very nice and many interactive tutorials on aspects of human anatomy. Recommended: Shockwave plugin and QuickTime plugin needed for interactive tutorials.
The NPAC Visible Human Viewer
This site uses images from the National Library of Medicine's Visible Human Project to illustrate aspects of human anatomy. Required: Java-enabled browser
Human Anatomy On-line
The content on this site allows the user to interactively explore human anatomy. There are several clickable images that provide detailed information about structures in the human body and animations that describe various processes. Also available is a tutorial on general human anatomy. Required: Java-enabled browser
Lung Tour
From the main page:
"LungTour is a set of images of the lung made with the Scanning Electron Microscope and organized in hyperimage format to allow you to travel through and see in more and more detail the structure of the lung. You begin with a whole lung that has been opened to show the branching airway; you can zoom in to the surface of this airway at different positions along its length at higher and higher magnification."
As indicated, the site provides in-depth examination of the fine structure of lungs. The site is part of the Image Library at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
Center for Human Simulation
The Health Sciences Center of the University of Colorado provides this site that has a nice collection of images and animations dealing with human anatomy. The image gallery has images of several actual and simulated body parts, while the animation and movie galleries have resources emphasizing particular anatomical features. There are also an online browsers for the Visible Human Male and Visible Human Female. Recommended: QuickTime plugin for movies
Body Voyager
Body Voyager is a "digital database of detailed anatomical images, including illustrated, fully dissectible male and female bodies (in anterior, lateral, medial and posterior views)." This "dissectible database" allows the user to select an area of the human body and then control how deeply into the body you dissect. There are over 22,000 anatomical structures available contained in over 300 individual layers. Very interesting and informative. Produced by A.D.A.M. Software, a major producer of anatomy multimedia and digital reference products.
The Virtual Body
This resource from Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corporation contains a number of basic interactive tutorials on human anatomy: the brain, the digestive system, the heart and the skeleton. (Our favorites are the digestive system and skeleton where you can reconstruct each system by clicking and dragging parts to their proper locations.) There is also a number of web links associated with each organ and system.Required: Shockwave plugin
The Whole Brain Atlas
This is a fantastic resource on all aspects of brain anatomy and disease. The real strength of the site is the enormous collection of images of normal human brains and brains suffering from various diseases (i.e., cerebrovascular disease ("stroke"), tumors, degenerative diseases, and inflammatory and infectious diseases). Most images are provided in a format where the user (you) can easily change the characteristics of "slice" through the brain that you are viewing. The site is also enhanced with many QuickTime movies showing particular aspects of brain function and anatomy, and there is a quiz of brain anatomy and introduction to the "Top 100 Brain Structures". The site is maintained by the Medical School at Harvard University. Recommended:QuickTime plugin and JAVA-enabled browser
