Mutant Fruit Fly Phenotypes
This exhibit, from the Exploratorium Museum in San Francisco, provides a brief introduction to mutations, and some nice images of several mutant fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster).
Virtual FlyLab
OK, this is pretty cool. This site allows you to simulate the crossing of two fruit flies to determine the pattern of inheritance of nine phenotypic traits (e.g., bristles, eye color, etc.). Try it!
Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM)
OMIM is an online version of "Mendelian Inheritance in Man" -- the comprehensive source on genetic disorders, by Dr. Victor McKusick. You can search for a particular genetic disorder by keyword (e.g., Tay-Sachs), and you will be provided with the results of a number of scientific studies dealing with that particular genetic condition, including a bibliography, a synopsis of the disease and a discussion of allelic variants.
MendelWeb is an educational resource for teachers and students interested in the origins of classical genetics, introductory data analysis, elementary plant science, and the history and literature of science. It contains online versions of Mendel's original publication (Experiments in Plant Hybridization), including a hypertext version with links to a glossary and other materials.
Experiments in plant hybridization by Gregor Mendal
This is a reproduction of Mendel's original paper in which he described his experiments on inheritance in peas. (Reproduced from Verhandlungen des naturforschenden Vereines in Brunn, Bd. IV fur das Jahr 1865, Abhandlungen, 3-47 (1865).) Required: Acrobat Reader.
Genetics Matching Game
Basic genetic terms -- especially relating to Mendelain genetics -- are tested in a flashcard, matching and concentration-style game format.
Morgan: A Genetics Tutorial
This tutorial is a very good introduction to basic information on Mendelian genetics. The material is divided into six categories and contains a great deal of graphics. The site is maintained by the Waksman Student Scholars of the Waksman Institute at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. Recommended: Chime plugin
The Gene School
This great site was an entry in the ThinkQuest competition (ThinkQuest is an annual international contest where students and teachers interact to produce web-based material on specific subjects) and provides a nice introduction to molecular and Mendelian genetic principles.
