Desmosome
Electromicrographs of desmosomes as junctional complexes between opposing plasma membranes and as hemi-demisomes between the epithelial cells and the basal lamina.
The Cytoskeleton and Phagocytosis
A confocal microscope and fluorescent dye are used to photograph the
redistribution of the cytoskeleton during phagocytosis of a yeast cell by a
protozoan. Includes a short movie clip.
Frogs and Active Transport
Relates the role of active transport in helping frogs and other aquatic
animals maintain an osmotic balance in their natural environment.
Demonstration of microtubule sliding in a beating flagellum
Watch undulations of a sea urchin spermatozoan flagellum and see the
sliding of internal microtubules as demonstrated by separation between gold
beads attached to doublet molecules. Takes a while to load, but worth the
wait.
Exocytosis
Illustrates exocytosis as a process by which cytoplasmic vesicles fuse with the plasma membrane, releasing the contents of the vesicles to the outside. Includes a Quicktime animation.
Endocytosis of Neutrophil
Watch endocytosis in action. Try part II as well.
Image Index
From the University of Minnesota - Duluth. Images of cell membranes and
membrane components. Some animations.
