Critical Thinking Activities - Chapter 28

Question 1. In many states, you must have a fishing license to hunt frogs. Many stores post a sign that says "No animals allowed." These regulations are often written into state laws. Why can't biology use such common English names rather than scientific names?

Question 2. Australia and the United States both have mouselike, catlike, and molelike animals. Yet the Australia versions of these mammals all have pouches (they are marsupials) while the U.S. animals are mostly placental. The other features are very similar between continents. Which of the three schools of classification might group the Australian and U.S. look-alikes together? Why do they appear similar?

Answers are available to instructors in the Instructor's Manual.
