Chapter 14 Lecture Enrichment Ideas

  • Read passages from biographies on the discovery of the structure of DNA. Students may be surprised to learn of the rivalry and arbitrary nature of many decisions in the process.
  • Pose this paradox: the correct replication of DNA is of such importance that there are different means of assuring it, yet it is important that the copying process not always be exact so there are mutations and evolution.
  • Emphasize how the structure of the DNA molecule is related to its different functions of storing information, replicating itself, and undergoing mutation. Focus on the bases in the center, the hydrogen bonding between them, and at the complementary nature of the base pairing.
