Chapter 34 Lecture Enrichment Ideas

  • Describe the similarities between the protostomes and deuterostomes—presence of a coelom, tube-within-a-tube body plan, mesoderm, etc.; audiovisuals are of great help in illustrating embryological development.
  • Examine the different adaptations of the mollusk body plan, and compare the body parts that differ within the groups. Describe how these body parts differ from those of an annelid or an arthropod. If it is a problem in your region, spend some time to illustrate the case of the introduced (exotic) zebra mussel.
  • Discuss the presence of sensory receptors in the head in some annelids, their absence in the earthworm, and what this implies about the environments in which these worms live.
  • Query why insects are so successful on land and why there are so many different species of insects. Why are there so many more entomologists than there are malacologists?
